Evaluation : short drama

                            Evaluation

For the task we had to create and make a short drama which involved confrontation focusing on Mise-en-scene, we had to take the setting of the drama, costume, lighting and performance into deep consideration to make the storyline of the drama clear to the audience. We had to do this task in groups the people in group was Cynthia Ankunda and Sabrina Yaaqub. we all did our individual contributions to this task, but did work as a group to achieve a great outcome of this task. The first thing which we did in a group was discuss what our storyline was going to be, for each person we had to come up with a storyline for our first storyline by Cynthia, she had an idea that we would base the drama on three girls or friends having lunch together and they all end up disagreeing on a matter. The second idea was my own which was three friends hanging out and one of the friend tells her friend that she is seeing her boyfriend, I pick this storyline because it would have had an immense amount of confrontation.the last idea was Sabrinas one which was about three sisters, two lived with their dad and the third one went to live with her drunk mother. And the sisters reunited at the passing of their father, and get over an argument over the fathers will of who should get the money left. in the ended instead on picking one of the three ideas, we al decided to combined the three stories to create one. The storyline we ended up picking was about three sisters, the oldest one was more mature and was formally engaged, the middle sister was going off to uni and the youngest sister was spoiled. The three of them end up in an argument of who should get the money and why. the oldest wanted the money to support her wedding and marriage, the middle child wanted the money to help pay for uni so she wouldn't be in debt, and youngest wanted the money for herself such as shopping. However in the end the father left no money for the girls. We decided upon this storyline because it was a combination of all three ideas,  it was simple and it had confrontation in it.

Is narrative clear?
In my opinion i thought the narrative of the story was in fact clear, i think this due to one of the features in mis-en-scene the performance. In our performance we used our body language, facial expressions and voice to covey out characters and narrative. In addition we made the storyline simple  and clear, we didn't go off the topic or ramble on we related everything such as the dialogue and performance to the narrative.

How it be improved?
There were a variety of aspects in the drama which work well such as the props and performance however there were something that could be improved. One of the things that could have been improved was the scene setting, due to not being able to leave college grounds and having to compromise the narrative of the drama could have been conveyed better if we had the right setting to show that the girls are either at home discussing the will or at lunch this could have added more meaning and relevance to the narrative in my opinion. Another thing that i think could have been improved upon, is costume i think the costume that we used for the drama was good but i do think if we went that extra mile and focused a bit on costume more it could portray the three sisters personality and characteristic more rather than mainly by performance of the body language and voice. however it was good in a way because then we would have to work harder on trying to portray our characters mainly by our performance which was a good challenge. One last thing that could have been improved more is the camera work, we planned to use camera work such as close up, pan ect. I do think that we could have used more close up on the props and on our facial expressions, for example when the sisters found out about the father leaving them no money their could perhaps been a close up on all three of the sisters reactions. I think we could of used the pan to show the three sisters, for example at the beginning of the drama the three sisters were praying we could of used the pan to show all three of the sisters praying and the middle sister praying a different way that the others to show her individuality and her Islamic religion.

Is Mis-en-scene effective?
I do think that mis-en-scene is effective, because all of the aspects and features in mis-en-scene create and convey the storyline to the audience. For example if a character didn't use her performance to convey her character, the audience wouldn't have an idea of the characters personality or role in the storyline, in that would make that character very interesting to watch. when watching anything whether its a film, shows or drama you need mis-en-scene because it helps to tell the story to the audience, and makes it more realistic to watch, and in that gives a greater impact or effect on the audience.

characters: who is there and what are they doing? Characters can be edgy or they can be quiet and introvert, it all depends on what they are doing.in our drama the characters were spoiled, mature and unique. The characters tell the audience about what the story is about and what the film maker wants them to feel and adds to the story. in addition the characters in the drama added to the story and also set the scene.

Costume: How the character is clothed, is very crucial because it gives the audience an idea of the character, and what the film-maker is trying to convey. for example in our drama the middle child was wearing a religious attire this told the audience what her religion was but also that she was in fact a religious person all together.

lighting: The lighting is very important, because it conveys the vibe of the film. for example if the lighting is high key it gives the impression to the audience that the film or drama is upbeat and happy., in contrast to low key light which would give the impression that the film is either sad or scary, but also tell the genre of the film.

Props: The props as anything in mis-en-scene is also crucial because sometimes props can add to a scene, on convey something in the characters life. for example in my drama the older sisters prop was a engagement ring this told the audience that this particular character was in fact engaged to be married.

Setting: The setting or location is a key element or aspects because it gives the audience a feel for the scene. The setting places the characters in predicaments and by the setting emotions can be provoked . For example if a couple was on the beach, taking a walk this would convey a romantic atmosphere.

Performance: Things in the characters performance such as facial expressions give the audience a clear understanding of how that character is feeling. For example in the drama when the sisters found out that the father hadn't left them with any money, you could see how surprised and annoyed they were through their facial expression. Also body language another feature of performance would also indicate how the character is feeling or may convey the characters relationship with one another.

Does Framing support mis-en-scene?
Framing does completely support mis-en-scene , it composes the frame of the film. Its important and cruical because mis-en-scene serves the purpose and is valued for helping to set the tone and scene of the film. but also emotion, meaning of the shot but also makes the film more effective therefore having a greater effect on the audience.

  1. Extensive examination of Mise en scene here, and other areas, reflected in your Confrontation Video. Much good work here with detailed examples, which would be supported by more use of technical terms like High Key Lighting. Interim Merit.
