Task 1: Moving Image Soundtrack

                     Task 1: Moving Image Soundtrack

Name the three main elements of moving images soundtracks?
There are three main elements which are crucial to moving images soundtracks, the three main elements are…
o   Spoken words
o   Sound FX (effects)
o   Music

Summaries the difference between diegetic and non- diegetic music and give an example of each.

Diegetic sound- This is sound effects in the world of the film, it is sound that either come from an individual in the film or an object in the diesis in other words the world of the story. Furthermore it is something that us as the audience would see.
In difference to Non- diegetic, this is sound effects that have been added in the stages of editing to give a particular seen more dramatic or have a greater effect on the audience reaction. Non- diegetic sounds are only heard by the audience, examples of this term is soundtrack music, voice overs or the sound of someone being stabbed. In addition sound can be added non- diegetically but sometimes belong to digenesis for instance in Children of Men the music playing on the radio in the car, it could have been added in the editing process.

Summarise the difference between synchronous and non- synchronous sound effects and give an example of each.
Synchronous is when the music is in synch with the event that is happening in the film. It contributes to the realisation of the film and sometimes creates a precise atmosphere. An a example of this is the ‘bang’ sound when someone is firing a gun, this simply is to convince us the audience that conveyed to be real, but also it is something that we would expect to hear when the gun is being fired. In addition or lip-sync where the actor or actress’s mouth move in time with the words we hear.
Non- synchronous or Asynchronous- This is a sound effect that deliberately doesn’t match what’s happening in the scene of the film. It is something that isn’t matched with the object or visible source being shown on the screen. These types of sounds are added, to portrayed or provided a suitable emotional tone, and make a specific seen more effective to the audience. For instance the film makers in The Mortal Instruments added romantic music when the couple were kissing to give the audience that romantic and loving vibe. It made that scene much more powerful and dream like. Or the film maker might add dark music, to notify that something bad is going to happen or make the audience scared.

List at least three different types of spoken word in film audio with an example of each.
o   Voiceover: This is when someone narrators the story or when a voice from outside the diegesis provides the audience with information. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiKfH1p-UuA- the main character uses voice over to portray his thoughts to the audience, I found that it was more effective than the character just saying the words out loud because to me it seemed more personal and meaningful.
o   Dialogue: This is the sound made by the characters in the film talking to one another. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgEtOAPYT3w
o   Sound Mixing: This is when sound is mixed from a variety of sources using a multi-track mixing desk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc507vq07Iw
